NDA English Grammar for GAT

Build GAT grammar and usage skills within the official UPSC Part A English scope.

In short

UPSC states that Part A tests understanding of English and the workmanlike use of words, including grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion in extended text. Because UPSC does not publish a detailed grammar chapter list, no coaching-style micro-syllabus is presented as official.

Skills to practise

A diagnostic skill structure

  • sentence correctness;
  • subject-verb agreement;
  • tense consistency;
  • pronoun reference;
  • modifiers;
  • articles and determiners;
  • prepositions;
  • conjunctions;
  • punctuation;
  • parallel structure;
  • error recognition in context.

These are preparation skills, not an official UPSC subtopic list.

Practice method

Five steps

  • Identify the grammar function being tested.
  • Explain why an option works in the sentence.
  • Practise short corrections.
  • Revisit recurring personal errors.
  • Finish with mixed contextual questions rather than isolated rule memorisation.

Checked against official NDA & NA GAT sources

UPSC does not publish a detailed English sub-topic list. Skills listed here are preparation skills and are never labelled official sub-sections.
