NDA History Syllabus and Preparation Guide for GAT

Study GAT History within the official UPSC scope: Indian history and culture, the freedom movement and named modern-world themes.

In short

The 2026 UPSC syllabus requires a broad survey of Indian History with emphasis on culture and civilisation, the Freedom Movement in India, and selected forces shaping the modern world. Depth stays at broad-survey level, not optional-subject level.

Official scope

Indian history and culture

Build a chronological overview rather than an advanced university-level treatment:

  • major phases of Indian history;
  • cultural and civilisational developments;
  • major institutions, ideas, art and society where they help a broad survey;
  • links between historical developments and the freedom movement.

Freedom movement

Prioritise:

  • major phases and milestones;
  • important organisations and movements;
  • significant personalities and ideas;
  • constitutional and political developments that help explain the movement.

Modern world themes explicitly named by UPSC

  • Renaissance
  • Exploration and Discovery
  • American War of Independence
  • French Revolution
  • Industrial Revolution
  • Russian Revolution
  • impact of science and technology on society
  • United Nations, Panchsheel and India's role in the present world
  • basic concepts of democracy, socialism and communism

Study method

How to build recall

  • Learn the timeline.
  • Connect cause, event and consequence.
  • Keep Indian and world-history notes separate, then add comparison links.
  • Use maps only where geography improves recall.
  • Practise factual identification plus simple cause-effect understanding.
