NDA Physics Syllabus and Preparation Guide for GAT

Study GAT Physics at the official UPSC depth, from matter and motion to optics, electricity, magnetism and everyday devices.

In short

GAT Physics is Section A of Part B. The official scope is elementary breadth: properties of matter, mechanics, heat and sound, light, magnetism and electricity, and the working principles of everyday devices. JEE-level derivations are out of scope.

Official syllabus coverage

Matter and mechanics

Physical properties and states of matter; mass, weight, volume, density, specific gravity; Archimedes' principle; pressure and barometer; motion, velocity, acceleration, Newton's laws, force, momentum, equilibrium, gravitation, work, power and energy.

Heat and sound

Temperature, heat, change of state, latent heat, transfer of heat, sound waves and simple musical instruments.

Light

Rectilinear propagation, reflection, refraction, spherical mirrors, lenses and the human eye.

Magnetism and electricity

Natural and artificial magnets; Earth as a magnet; static and current electricity; conductors and non-conductors; Ohm's law; simple circuits; heating, lighting and magnetic effects; electrical power; primary and secondary cells; use of X-rays.

Everyday principles

Simple pendulum, pulleys, siphon, levers, balloon, pumps, hydrometer, pressure cooker, thermos flask, gramophone, telegraph, telephone, periscope, telescope, microscope, mariner's compass, lightning conductors and safety fuses.

Depth rule

Concept, unit, relationship, application

Teach concept, unit, basic relationship and everyday application. JEE-level derivations and advanced numerical problem sets are not imported.

Checked against official NDA & NA GAT sources

Scope authority is the official UPSC NDA notification. Section proportions, where shown, are official approximate syllabus proportions and never predicted weightage.
