In short

Clearing the written NDA examination does not finish the selection process. Candidates who move forward are assessed through the Services Selection Board process and, where relevant, service-specific testing and medical examination. The safest way to prepare is to understand the official stages, become clearer about your own experiences and decisions, practise communication under time pressure, and avoid memorised "ideal" responses.

SSB at a glance

SSB at a glance

The official Air Force selection guidance describes Stage I as screening with the Officer Intelligence Rating test and Picture Perception and Discussion Test. Candidates who qualify Stage I proceed to Stage II, which includes psychological tests, group tests and a personal interview. The conference comes at the end of the board process. Candidates seeking the Air Force Flying pathway may also face CPSS under the applicable official rules.

The exact reporting schedule, centre instructions and sequence should always be checked in the candidate's official call-up instructions. A coaching timetable is not an authority.

What happens in Stage I

Officer Intelligence Rating

Treat OIR as a timed reasoning task. Preparation can improve familiarity with common reasoning formats, reading speed, calculation discipline and decision-making under time pressure.

Useful preparation:

  • practise timed reasoning from legitimate sources;
  • record whether errors came from concept, speed, careless reading or guessing;
  • stop using a single practice score as a prediction of SSB recommendation.

What Rank Sarthi must not say:

  • an OIR score guarantees screening in;
  • a particular raw score is always "safe";
  • assessors secretly weight one question type in a fixed way.

Picture Perception and Discussion Test

PPDT involves individual perception/story work followed by group discussion. Prepare by learning to observe before assuming, build a coherent sequence, speak clearly and participate without trying to dominate every exchange.

A useful self-review after practice:

  1. What did I actually observe?
  2. Which part of my story was an assumption?
  3. Was the sequence understandable?
  4. Could I state the core idea briefly?
  5. In discussion, did I listen and respond, or only wait to speak?

This is a communication review, not an assessor-scoring model.

What happens in Stage II

Psychological tests

Official Air Force guidance describes written psychological testing conducted by a psychologist. Candidate preparation should focus on understanding instructions, working honestly under time limits and reflecting on real behaviour before the board.

Do not build an answer bank for TAT, WAT, SRT or self-description tasks. Rehearsed "officer-like" language can make preparation less authentic and is not an official selection rule.

Group tests

Group activities combine mental and physical work. Preparation can improve basic fitness, listening, concise communication and comfort working with others. It cannot ethically reproduce confidential board material or guarantee performance.

Personal interview

The interview is a personal conversation with the interviewing officer. The most useful preparation is to know your own record accurately: education, activities, responsibilities, interests, choices, setbacks, goals and the reasons behind them.

Use a simple reflection structure:

  • Context: what was happening?
  • Your role: what were you responsible for?
  • Action: what did you actually do?
  • Result: what happened?
  • Reflection: what did you learn or change?

This structure is for recalling your own experience. It is not a "correct answer" template.

The conference

The conference

The official Air Force process states that the psychologist, Ground Testing Officer and interviewing officer participate in the final conference decision. Rank Sarthi should not turn this fact into invented formulas about how individual assessors score candidates.

What you can prepare ethically

What you can prepare ethically

You can prepare:

  • reasoning speed and accuracy;
  • clear speaking and listening;
  • personal-record accuracy;
  • reflection on genuine experiences;
  • current affairs from reliable sources;
  • basic physical readiness;
  • comfort following unfamiliar instructions.

You should not prepare by:

  • memorising model psychology answers;
  • fabricating leadership stories;
  • copying someone else's self-description;
  • trying to decode an alleged secret scoring formula;
  • believing any source that guarantees recommendation.

A practical SSB preparation loop

A practical SSB preparation loop

After each practice session, write three lines:

  • What was the task?
  • What did I control well or poorly?
  • What one behaviour will I practise next?

Keep the loop behavioural. "Become more officer-like" is too vague to be useful.

Before reporting

Before reporting

Use the official call-up letter as the final authority for documents, reporting details and instructions. Recheck service eligibility and medical requirements on the current official sources rather than relying on old blog posts.
